Stop the press for newsagent Margaret

A MUCH loved Lockerbie newsagent has sold her last paper.

Margaret Wilson, of Margaret’s Newsagents on Lockerbie High Street, said farewell to her customers after 14 years in the business last Friday.

The well known mum-of-one had previously worked in the town’s Safeway supermarket for 20 years and it was her love of Lockerbie folks that spurred her on to open her own business.

And in 2014 a new challenge came her way when she transformed her shop to accommodate a Post Office for the town too.

She said: “I’ve loved every minute of it, Margaret’s Newsagents really is very special to me.”

Highlights for Margaret include the shop’s annual Santa’s Grotto, which raises money for the Dumfries Oncology Unit, and getting to speak to her customers every day.

Discussing her decision to retire, she said: “There just comes a time when you feel it’s right.

“I love the banter and all my customers so much. Many laughs have been shared in Margaret’s and many memories made too.

“I would just like to say thank you to all my customers and staff, past and present. Knowing them made it very easy to stay for so long and very hard to leave.”

Margaret plans to dedicate more time to walking and spending time with family and friends but says she will not be doing much relaxing as she’s not one to stay still.

Stepping up the plate to become the new owner of Margaret’s, which will retain its name, is her daughter-in-law Karen Wilson.

Karen has worked alongside Margaret for many years and in 2014 even featured in the Post Office’s official Christmas advert alongside the likes of Amanda Holden and Pixie Lott.
