A POPULAR Dumfries librarian has retired after nearly 50 years in the role.
Cath Aitken was just 16 when she decided to apply for a job at the Ewart Library in February 1977. She was successful and started the next day.
Fast forward 48 years, Cath has moved through the ranks and still has a passion for books.
But she decided it was the end of her library chapter as her daughter Adele is expecting a grandchild.
Cath, 64, said: “When I first started there were a lot of girls who worked at the library from my school.
“It was when the county council changed to Dumfries and Galloway Council so my first job was to change all the labels on the books. It did take a while!
“My daughter is having a baby in February so I think it’s a good time to go.
“I already have two older grandchildren and two step grandchildren too. But this is going to be my new challenge!”
Cath has been involved in a number of events during her near five decade spell at the library, including treasure hunts, trips and barbecues.
But her favourite event was 20 years ago when the Ewart Library celebrated its 100th birthday. She recalled: “We did this amazing all-day event. We borrowed costumes from the Theatre Royal and got dressed up. I had a green outfit on.
“We paraded all over the town and marched everywhere. We sat at Greyfriars and got loads of photographs taken. It was a big day.
“The library is a real community hub. I’ve worked with some amazing staff throughout the years. I keep in touch with a lot of them.
“I’m the last person standing from the group. It’s the end of an era. “There’s a couple of girls still working there but I’ll be the longest serving and the oldest!
“I’ll make sure I go in with my library card but that’s if I have the time because I’ll be busy with a new arrival.”
