Successful start to pipe band season

IT was a sunshine start to the new season for Lochmaben Royal Burgh Pipe Band.

The successful pipe band started 2016 with a first place finish when they took part in the 60th Gourock Highland Games on Sunday.

They competed alongside 40 bands from all over Scotland and were drawn to play fifth in the grade three contest at tenth in the grade two contest.

Spokeswoman Andrea McRobert said: “The band started to tune up about 1 pm and managed to keep control of the chanter sound to produce a good solid sound.

“When it is warm and sunny the heat affects the pipes where it makes the sound go really sharp.”

The band played their medley in the grade three contest and were awarded first place.

And then went onto the grade two contest where they played their March Strathspey and Reel set and finished fourth behind three top grade two bands.

Andrea added: “The band have had the best possible start to this season and hope to continue when they travel to Dunbar on Saturday which will be followed up with the British Pipe Band Championships in Paisley on Saturday May 21.”
