And Southerness and Kirkcudbright are proving the two most popular destinations locally, with bookings to Southerness up by 150 per cent, compared to 2019.
The new data from Sykes Holiday Cottages found this region is the most popular of all in Scotland for Brits.
CEO Graham Donoghue said: “While Highlands has always been a firm favourite for so many travellers across Scotland and the rest of the UK, our research shows that Dumfries and Galloway has overtaken the region to become the most popular Scottish staycation destination this summer.
“With its coastal location close to the border, and everything the county has to offer, it’s no wonder that Dumfries and Galloway has taken the holiday top spot, and we expect this popularity to continue in the years to come.”
South Scotland MSP Emma Harper has welcomed the results and said: “The Syke’s 2022 Scotland Staycation Index is great news for Scotland and for staycations.
“With Dumfries & Galloway offering outstanding natural beauty, high quality visitor attractions and outdoor pursuits, as well top quality food and drink produce, I’m not surprised more people are choosing to come here to spend their hard-earned cash – and the fact people are coming to our region in higher numbers is no doubt down to the hard work of all those involved in in our region’s tourism businesses and attractions.”
