Support for disabled facilities in Langholm

A MOVE to introduce a Changing Places toilet in Langholm will increase “accessibility and inclusivity”, it has been claimed.

Dumfries and Galloway Council has unveiled plans to install this specialist disabled toilet – which is a larger facility that has the right equipment, including a changing bench and a hoist, to support disabled people who need assistance.

The local authority intends on adding a Changing Places toilet at the Kilngreen in Langholm, which will be an extension to the existing toilet building currently located there.

An eight-week public consultation was held around six months ago, which received one response – a very favourable one.

The respondent, who was unnamed, wrote a letter to the council, stating: “This will increase the accessibility and inclusivity of Langholm and the surrounding area for both the local community and visitors.

“Being able to offer visitors to a changing places toilet facility as part of our developing eco-tourism offer for the town and the wider area will be highly beneficial.

“This is especially important for those who may experience barriers to visiting rural areas and experiencing nature in Eskdale.”

Installing the new toilets is due to be discussed at Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee next Wednesday.
