ANYONE in Dumfries and Galloway who is losing their sight can get support from a free telephone counselling service.
It is run by charity RNIB Scotland, who are also highlighting the importance of everyone going for regular eye examinations.
They are particularly keen to flag up the risks around glaucoma in which the optic nerve is damaged by the pressure of the fluid inside the eye. It first affects peripheral (or side) vision and it can be difficult to notice any early changes.
“That’s why regular eye examinations, which are free for everyone in Scotland, are so important,” emphasises James Adams, director of RNIB Scotland.
“The risk of glaucoma increases as you get older. If glaucoma is not treated, it can cause you to lose your sight. If it is diagnosed and treated early enough, further damage to your sight can be arrested. Sight loss caused by glaucoma can’t be reversed. But treatments such as eye drops and laser surgery can help prevent sight loss from happening.”
Glaucoma becomes more likely as you get older. Those who are short-sighted or have diabetes or high blood pressure also have a greater chance of getting glaucoma.
Mr Adams added: “Our Need to Talk telephone counselling service can help people come to terms with their sight condition and maximize their independence; providing a friendly and reassuring voice to people and addressing any concerns and worries they may have.”
