Talking newspaper team pay tribute to Jim

THANKS have been expressed to Jim Cowan, of Sandhead, who has retired after many years of voluntary service as secretary of the Galloway Talking Newspaper Association for the blind (GTN).

He was presented with an engraved quaich as a token of thanks by the GTN chairman, Bob Fryer. His wife Catherine, was presented with a bouquet of flowers for helping Jim on many occasions.

Jim, who is now 80, served as a reader and editor on many occasions but his real forte was as an organiser so he took on secretary as well.

With 24 volunteers producing weekly recordings of local news from the Free Press and Galloway Gazette, Jim was kept busy over the years ensuring the charity ran smoothly.

Recent volunteer Andrew Harvey has stepped in as his replacement.

The free service is available to blind and partially sighted people in the Rhins and Machars. More information is available by contacting Andrew Harvey on 07484670737, or chairman Bob Fryer on 07947307302.

New volunteers are always welcome and no prior experience is required.
