CURRENT teacher numbers will be maintained in Dumfries and Galloway.
Members of the Labour Group on Dumfries and Galloway Council have secured a guarantee that there will be no cuts in teachers locally.
In February they included a red line in their 2024 budget proposals to protect numbers. It was followed by a successful motion in October requesting the immediate reinstatement of teacher numbers.
Labour’s education spokesperson Cllr Paula Stevenson this week said:
“At the education committee meeting on a report finally included and confirmed where the £500k would be spent. Delivering the best support for our children is a key aim for the Labour Group and we welcome that the funding will focus on secondary learning centre provision supporting the most vulnerable pupils, and the five schools with the largest pupil teacher ratio.
“This additional funding in teacher numbers will be utilised in the best way, at the best time possible when our young people are preparing for exams and need that extra support.”
