Tech-riffic year for DJ

A HECTIC eight months has resulted in an Annan DJ’s meteoric resurgence in the world of techno.

Ki Creighton, owner of Under No Illusions Records, has been taking major steps in the industry, signing some of techno’s most recognisable names such as Skream, and playing with some of the biggest stars of the scene for the last 20 years.

He said: “This past couple of months have been pretty hectic, I played two gigs in Prague. Looking ahead, this weekend I am playing the Circus stage at Cream fields and this set is also being streamed worldwide and then it’s straight up the road to play for my good friend Lee Clark at his summer soundsystem party in Dumfries, before moving again next weekend when I move to the Channel Islands to play the Jersey weekender with Latmun, Mark Jenkyns, Klangkuenstelar and Iglesias.”

Later this year the DJ will also be supporting Camelphat, who hit the mainstream charts in the last year with hits such as Cola and Panic Room.

Meanwhile, his record label has seen top ten tracks on beatport and is sitting in the top 30 overall in tech house.

He said: “The label is a labour of love, it’s something I always wanted to do and it seems to be really taking off now.

“The Skream signing is a big one. I’ve got this new track set up to go next year.

“We also have Max Chapman and George Smeddles on this project, as well as my label A and R head Adison, so I’m pretty excited for it coming next summer.”

He added: “Things have taken off on both scales this past couple of years: the label side of things breeds the DJ side and vice versa.

“I have been talking to Calvin Harris this week in regards to my label as he’s been playing a few of our releases, most recently last week at Pacha Ibiza, and also Groove Armada who have been major supporters.”

And he revealed that he’s bringing back a popular club night to Carlisle in October featuring a legend in the techno scene, Danny Tenaglia.

Made famous for tracks such as Music Is The Answer, Danny is a heavyweight and a major addition to the line-up at Uber.

Ki said: “Since we decided to call it a day at Uber after ten years, we have been hit on a day today, week-to-week, month-to- month basis of people asking us to come back.

“Danny is an act we have wanted from day one. We have worked tirelessly for months to bring him to Carlisle.”

Looking ahead to the next 12 months, Ki believes it will be a massive time for techno music, citing Iglesias, Vincenzo D’Amico and Ben Sterling as rising stars of the genre.
