Terror in Nice

A WOMAN from Annan has described the atmosphere in the French city of Nice following a terrorist attack there yesterday.

Julie Leslie and partner Stuart Elliot have a home in the Cote d’Azur and are currently out there enjoying some autumn sunshine.

But the atmosphere in the glamorous resort turned dark yesterday morning when three people were killed at the Notre Dame basilica, not far from where the couple are based.

Julie last night told the Annandale Observer: “I heard sirens but to be honest, that’s not unusual in the centre. It happened just a few blocks from where I live!

“I heard about the attack on the local radio ‘Riviera Radio’ and we were told to keep away from Jean Médecin. It’s a very busy street as it’s the main shopping area and tram line.”

She explained there was a strong police presence everywhere throughout the day, adding: “The churches were tolling their bells this afternoon in tribute to the victims.

“Of course it’s all cordoned off where the attack happened but it’s still very busy as people are shopping ahead of the lockdown tomorrow.”

Upset by the macabre turn of events, she said: “I personally just feel shocked and saddened as I’m sure the Niçoise people will also. Scary times.”

French police last night said the attacks were the work of terrorists and a man had been arrested in connection with the incident.
