The Boss pens new Sharks deal

SOLWAY Sharks legend Ross Murray will return to the club for their historic 2023/24 season.

The 30-year-old will go into his 12th season with the Dumfries club ahead of their first campaign in the NIHL.

The forward has made nearly 400 appearances for the club and despite some rumours his future could be elsewhere, Murray – known as The Boss – admits playing in the top division with his home-town team made it an easy decision to stay.

He said: “It’s too exciting, it’s been some journey so far with the Sharks, so why get so close to the line and not go over it?

“I’m definitely excited to be back and rightfully where we should have been a long time ago. I’m looking forward to the challenge.

“This is where we should be. Regardless of the travel, it’s where we want to be, playing with the best players in the country, against the best teams and it’s an exciting time, not just for Dumfries, but also for the whole of Scottish ice hockey.”

After winning the Grand Slam last season, Murray hopes the club can find their feet quickly in the top division.

“You’ve got to be respectful, you can’t just expect to jump in there and dominate but also we’re not just there to be passengers, we’re there to take part.

“One thing that Dumfries has got is that we know how to win, it’s in our blood now. We might need to dip our toes in to see where we’re at and how we’re feeling and how the boys adjust to that level, but we need to adjust pretty quickly.

“I think we’ll do good. I think in the first three years that we’ll be in a final or we’ll be competing right at the top.

“Solway always finds a way – it’s a part of the club’s culture that we always find a way to adjust and there’s no doubt in my mind that within the first three years, we’ll definitely be up there.”
