ENQUIRES into a ‘distressing’ dog attack in Kirkcowan last week are ongoing, say police.
The attack happened overnight last Thursday when a red lurcher-type dog attacked a flock of North Country Cheviot ewe hoggs in fields adjacent to the B733 Kirkcowan to Wigtown road.
As a result, three sheep were killed and two were injured and required treatment before the dog was lawfully killed by the sheep owner.
Constable Fraser Marshall from Newton Stewart Police Station said: “We are aware of a dog attacking sheep in the Kirkcowan area of Newton Stewart on Friday 14 March.
“As a result three sheep died from their injuries and two further required veterinary treatment.
“Enquiries are ongoing to trace the owner of the dog, which is described as a red lurcher type.
“This was a distressing incident for all involved and there is legislation is in place to protect livestock from dog attacks.
“It is the dog owner’s responsibility to ensure their dog is on a lead and under control when livestock is present.
“The damage and distress caused not just to the animals, but the farming business is considerable.”
Anyone with information on the dog owner is being asked to contact 101 quoting reference 1053 of 14 March.
