Top schools

TEACHERS, parents and pupils at five of the region’s secondary schools are celebrating after they were named in the top 100 in Scotland.

Moffat Academy was the highest in the area in Sunday Times top 100 list, ranked at 25th overall, which puts it in the top seven per cent of all secondaries in Scotland.

Acting head teacher Andrea Macfarlane, pictured, said: “Obviously I’m delighted that the hard work of our young people and staff is recognised in this way. However, these tables only measure one aspect of schooling and at Moffat Academy we pride ourselves on ensuring that all our young people receive a well rounded education. We focus not only on preparing them for national qualifications, but also for life beyond school.”

Other schools from the region featuring in the top 100 were Wallace Hall in joint 37th place; St Joseph’s at Dumfries at 40; Kirkcudbright Academy at 52; and Dalbeattie High School at 86.

Behind the scenes on new Lockerbie drama

A NEW series based on parts of the Lockerbie Disaster is now showing on Sky this week. Featuring Colin Firth and Catherine McCormack, ‘A Search for Truth’ was inspired by the memoirs of Dr Jim Swire, who lost his daughter Flora in the 1988 tragedy. Filming took place in Scotland and Morocco in early 2024 and Annandale Herald editor Fiona Reid went on the set to meet the cast and crew and find out more about it.
