Tornado season approaching

LOCKERBIE Tornadoes Basketball Club are gearing up for the start of a new season with senior and junior training set to resume in the coming weeks.

And players and sponsors are wanted for both teams. No previous basketball experience is necessary, just an enthusiasm for the sport and willingness to learn, coaching will be provided.

The senior team are currently the only competitive club in Dumfries and Galloway, they resume training on Tuesday night at Lockerbie Academy games hall, ahead of the start of the Strathclyde League First Division in September.

The team currently features former professional player and Scotland international Stuart Mackay as well as players from Slovakia, Lithuania, USA and England.

Men and women are welcome to attend the sessions, although the league is men only.

And the Junior Tornadoes restart on Tuesday August 22 at 6 pm. Since the formation of a youth section, the sessions have been very well attended.

Boys and girls from P6 to S6 are welcome to attend. Youngsters travel from around the region and it is hoped that the junior team will be able to join a league next year.

Head coach Robin Laidlaw said: “Everyone is welcome to attend these sessions we are trying to recruit more players and get more sponsors on board.”
