Town benches to be replaced . . . finally!

‘SIGNIFICANT’ and ‘vital’ benches in Lochmaben haven’t been replaced after they were removed two years ago.

But the town’s community council are stepping in to try help get a new bench at the Town Hall and one at Annandale Crescent.

Former community councillor Jane Purdie brought the issue up at Monday’s meeting.

She said: “Lochmaben has an aged community, with some vulnerable. A lot of them like to keep their independence.

“The benches were so significant and vital for them, especially the one at the Town Hall. But it’s been taken away, it needs to be looked at.

“The elderly have nowhere to sit, I feel the Town Hall is the place to sit.”

Community councillor Cerys Mainprize noted that she had previously talked to the council about the matter.

She said: “They returned to say that the bench outside the town was taken away two years ago after vandalism and wasn’t scheduled to be replaced.”

Annandale North councillor Carolyne Wilson added that the local authority’s remit was if a bench wasn’t safe they would remove it but wouldn’t replace it.

Now the community council has agreed to help and hope to set up a fundraiser.
