Townsfolk help keep Annan blooming

COMMUNITY spirit is helping to bring blooms to Annan High Street.

A small but growing group of people have adopted flower tubs which line the busy street, and a call is being issued for more to get involved.
Fiona Kerr has adopted two tubs with husband Jeff, and she said: “We were away in Kelso a few weeks ago and the flowers looked beautiful, and that has spurred us on to do something.
“I spoke to Marion Stewart from the community council, and said, ‘We would be willing to sponsor a flower tub’.”
The Royal Burgh of Annan Community Council endorsed the move, and Fiona added: “We’ve actually decided to take on two in front of Annan Old Parish Church — the square ones.”
Meanwhile, Marion and her sister Janet Johnstone have adopted a flower tub next to the war memorial.
Marion said: “I’ve now got Robert and Yvonne McGregor doing another tub, and I’ve had interest from a local plumber.”
Jeff Kerr notes John Mackie, of J&E Mackie hardware and ironmongers, maintains two hanging baskets at the Cafe Royal, and that he is the source for the flowers.
And Jeff said: “These hanging baskets are only £20.”
Members of Annan Academy’s Da Vinci Challenge team recently undertook weeding of tubs in return for funding from the community council.
But hoping other people might now follow the example of the volunteers, Fiona said: “Our hope would be that it would spur other people on to do the very same thing.”
Looking to the tubs in front of the church, she added: “We’ll take this on now for as long as we’re fit and able to do it.”
Anyone else interested in adopting tubs can contact The Royal Burgh of Annan Community Council.
