Tributes to Lockerbie rescuer

THE death has been announced of a Scottish Mountain Rescue ‘legend’, who played a leading role in the aftermath of the Lockerbie disaster.

David Whalley, from Moray, was a senior team leader for the rescue effort following the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in December 1988.

In recent times he revealed it had taken a toll on his mental health, saying he could not get out of bed for three of four weeks.

And he described the scenes he saw as “like hell” and “terrible”, adding: “It was so dangerous, and there were fatalities everywhere.”

Paying tribute to Mr Whalley, Scottish Mountain Rescue described him as ‘a true legend of Mountain Rescue and an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him’.
