Save Our Hills, a group created to fight back against further windfarm development in Dumfries and Galloway, looked at the number of operational turbines, those under construction, how many are in the planning system and sites being ‘scoped’ by developers.
And they say that the total number for Dumfries and Galloway could eventually stand at 1419 turbines.
The figure – broken down into 551 operational turbines, 276 under construction, 401 in the planning system and 191 being scoped – has sparked calls to the Scottish Government for a change in policy.
Local campaigners say the region is already at ‘saturation point’ with onshore windfarms and any more development would ‘further wreck’ the landscape.
Spokesman for Save Our Hills, Iain Milligan, said: “Dumfries and Galloway is at saturation point with onshore windfarms and people have had enough.
“The prospect of significantly more turbines dominating the landscape is of real concern for people and businesses.
“The scenery in this area is unique and should be left alone.”
He continued: “This analysis shows developers are lining up to cover our surroundings with wind turbines.
“We need to see action now from the local authority and Scottish Government ministers alike.
“They must change their approach to developers, who are only interested in making a quick profit.
“Dumfries and Galloway has already done more than its fair share towards net zero.”
