Twin towns call it a day

IT’S au revoir to Moffat and District Twinning Association after 21 years of French fun.

The group (MDTA) was set up in 2002 to promote Moffat’s links with Montreuil sur Ille in Brittany.

And over the last two decades, many Francophile Moffatonians have enjoyed visits to their twin town and also hosted several stays here, with packed programmes of tours and fun for the French guests.

The outgoing organisers say that lots of ‘close and lasting’ friendships have been established between the two locations over the years.

A spokeswoman said: “And that now will become the legacy of MDTA since, sadly but realistically, the decision has been taken that the Moffat Association should close.

“And likewise our twinned Association in Brittany has now folded.

“Due in large part to reduced membership numbers both here and in Montreuil, and with the interruptions to travel caused by covid.

“So, there is no longer any formal connection or contact between our two towns, but ongoing links of friendship and, no doubt, private visits to and from Montreuil will continue between individual twins.”

Meanwhile, the funds remaining in MDTA’s bank account have now been donated to Moffat Academy to enhance their language-teaching resources.

She added: “Finally, our grateful thanks to all who have helped in the organisation and enjoyment of MDTA through the years.”
