PUPILS vaping at Annan Academy is becoming an “increasing concern”.
A letter from the school was sent out to parents and guardians yesterday to highlight the growing issue of students vaping on school premises.
In the past week, instances of pupils vaping in the school toilets have triggered the fire alarm system – an in one case, an alarm interrupted a crucial SQA exam.
The incidents have prompted school officials to send a plea to parents and carers to speak with their children about the serious consequences of vaping, both for their health and for their education.
The letter read: “Vaping is strictly prohibited at Annan Academy – this includes all areas of the school building, the school grounds and
school transport.
“It is also important to note that vaping in any council building is illegal, as is the sale of vapes to anyone under the age of 18.
“Unfortunately, in the past week, instances of pupils vaping in the school toilets have triggered the fire alarm system, resulting in a full school evacuation.
“These incidents have caused significant disruption to the learning of all pupils and, in one instance, interrupted important SQA final examinations.
“Pupils at Annan Academy have a right to an education that is free from unnecessary disturbance and distress caused by the irresponsible and illegal actions of others.
“Any pupil found vaping on school grounds or within the school building will be dealt with appropriately, and parents or carers will be informed.”
The school also highlighted the health concerns associated with vaping.
The letter added: “We urge all parents and carers to speak with their children about the serious consequences of vaping, both for their health and for their education.”
