MIXED views have been expressed by the region's politicians on the appointment of new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Scottish Secretary, and Dumfries and Galloway Conservative MP Alister Jack said: “Congratulations to Rishi Sunak, I wish him the very best in the job and offer him my wholehearted support. I urge the Conservative Party to come together behind our new Prime Minister.

“We are facing very significant challenges at home and abroad, and there is much to be done. We need to unite and focus on delivering for everyone in our country.”

Fellow Tory for Dumfriesshire, David Mundell believes it’s “the best way forward for the country” and said the new PM will bring calm and stability.

However, South Scotland Labour MSP Carol Mochan referred to it as “a kick in the teeth for our democracy”

Calling for a General Election, she said: “It is absolutely imperative that this government seeks a new mandate after changing Prime Minister three times in as many months. We have no idea what Sunak even intends to do, yet he has been given the most powerful job in the land on the back of a 100 or so votes from MPs who rarely leave Westminster.

“There is only one reason an election has yet to be called and that is because the Tories know Labour will win and offer a vision for the entirety of the UK, rather than chaos designed to help profiteers at the expense of everyone else.”
