Village’s public toilets targeted by vandals

A COUNCILLOR has slammed the vandalism of Ecclefechan public toilets and described it a “disgusting mess”.

Council leader Gail Macgregor was asked by villagers why the toilets weren’t open.

So she popped down to Langlands Road where she discovered horrific vandalism: the door for the ladies toilet was damaged and the toilet seat had been ripped off. Cans of alcohol were also found within the room.

An irate Cllr Macgregor said: “I was greeted with the most disgusting mess and the ladies door kicked in and vandalised. I have reported this to the council.

“It was deeply embarrassing that whilst I was there two tradesmen arrived needing to spend a penny and I had to say they’re in a disgusting state and sorry.

“I know many tourists, delivery drivers and tradesfolk use the facilities and I want to understand why they’re in such a state and why they’ve been closed.”

After raising issues with the local authority, Cllr Macgregor added: “The lady who normally looks after them is currently off work.

“Unfortunately the council didn’t replace her on a temporary basis, I have asked that interim arrangements be found and the mess rectified. “The police and community safety team will need to deal with the vandalism element.”

Police Scotland was contacted for comment.
