NEWTON Stewart will need to play the waiting game in order to find out if they will be crowned South of Scotland League champions.
They defeated Upper Annandale 4-2 at New King Edward Park, Lockerbie, last Saturday to end their league campaign with three points.
Billy Gray opened the scoring 20 minutes in for Uppers. But Craig McCulloch soon equalised for Newton.
Newton started the second half well, and they got themselves in front in the 55th minute, Marc Whyte fired a half volley into the bottom corner.
The Creesiders’ lead was short-lived, however, as Uppers equalised through Kris Amponsah.
The next goal would be pivotal. And it was Newton who found the net courtesy of Jack Marshall.
Newton then added a fourth as full-back Robbie Murray stepped up to find the top corner with a free kick from 25 yards. The Creesiders currently occupy top spot in the division after playing all 22 matches. They have a total of 50 points, two more than Lochar Thistle. However, Lochar still have two fixtures left to play.
But there season is still not done and dusted. Cup action remains, with three semi finals to look forward to. The first of which comes against Upper Annandale at the same location this Saturday.
Elsewhere, Creetown enjoyed a thumping 5-0 win over Gretna 2008 U20s at Castle Cary Park in the Cree Lodge Cup quarter final.
This weekend the Ferrytoun travel to Lochar in the league, while Stranraer Reserves make the journey to Gretna in the SCFA Challenge Cup semi final.
