War memorials chance to shine

SEVEN war memorials around Annandale and Eskdale have been entered in a national competition.

Cllr Archie Dryburgh has put forward the memorials at Annan, Lockerbie, Gretna Green, Eastriggs, Ecclefechan, Canonbie and Langholm for the Royal British Legion Scotland Best Kept War Memorial Competition 2021.

It will be a forerunner to Dumfries and Galloway Council’s own war memorial competition.

Community groups in the areas now have a few weeks to spruce up their sites and add flowers before the judges visit at the end of this month and early next month for the British Legion, followed by the council judging in late July and the start of August.

Cllr Dryburgh said: “In this 100th year of RBLS and Poppy Scotland, I hope communities will take a keen interest to improve their local memorials.”

Behind the scenes on new Lockerbie drama

A NEW series based on parts of the Lockerbie Disaster is now showing on Sky this week. Featuring Colin Firth and Catherine McCormack, ‘A Search for Truth’ was inspired by the memoirs of Dr Jim Swire, who lost his daughter Flora in the 1988 tragedy. Filming took place in Scotland and Morocco in early 2024 and Annandale Herald editor Fiona Reid went on the set to meet the cast and crew and find out more about it.
