Warm welcome for mayor

A NEW friendship has been formed between Dumfries and Kandy in Sri Lanka.

It comes after the Mayor of Kandy, Kesera Senanayake, paid a visit to the town last week with his family to see the newly restored fountain.

He was greeted by provost Maureen Johnstone, pictured, and enjoyed a civic reception.

As we reported last week, Kandy and Dumfries boast twin town fountains, both crafted in the Sun Foundry, Glasgow, and sharing many identical features.

Mayor Senanayake said: “It has been an honour to receive such a warm welcome by our new friends here in Dumfries. Our countries have many historical connections and it is a privilege to play a part in strengthening these bonds between us.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed our visit and the hospitality extended to my family and myself. We are bonded to the town and look forward to future cooperation and a lasting friendship.”
