Water warning

A WATER scarcity warning has been issued for Scotland, including this area, after a below-average rainfall winter following a dry autumn.

The lack of rainfall is a possible sign of water scarcity heading into warmer months, say The Met Office.

“As part of our commitment to helping Scotland become more climate resilient, we’ll continue to monitor the situation closely. Seasonal reporting will begin in May, providing weekly updates on conditions to ensure businesses can prepare for any potential challenges ahead,” said Claire Tunaley, senior hydrologist of the Water Resources Unit, SEPA.

With the lack of rainfall in the colder months, there is a heavier dependence and need for greater rainfall in the spring to replenish the groundwater levels. If the groundwater is not replenished, there is a greater risk of water scarcity leading to a strain on supplies and industries.

SEPA is now urging those licensed to extract water to take steps to enhance their water resilience, hoping to limit water waste.

People can check SEPA regularly for updates and advice to follow heading into the warmer months.
