Way back when

THIS copy of the Annan Observer and Annandale Monthly Advertiser from January 8, 1857, was handed into our office last week by Irene Stables from South Yorkshire.

The opening paragraph states: “The Annan Observer and Annandale Monthly Advertiser will be published monthly for 12 months, as an experiment. It will thereafter, if the experiment succeed according to expectation, assume a different form, and be published more frequently.”

Irene, who was brought up in Victoria Road before moving to England, said: “We have read it and it’s quite funny in a lot of places. It’s quite interesting how they used to write in those days.

“I’ve had it a while just stuck in a drawer. My dad – John (Jack) Hepburn worked there at the Annandale Observer round about 1949/1950.

“When we moved to South Yorkshire he worked at another newspaper as a linotype operator.”
