Youngster in charity cycle ride for farm

A 12-year-old volunteer at Mossburn Community Farm is gearing up for a 160 kilometre cycle next month to raise money for the farm.

Hazel from Kettleholm, left, will be making the 160 kilometre cycle from Dumfries to Glasgow with her dad Tim to raise funds for the animal sanctuary near Hightae.

She was inspired to take up the challenge by a family friend who previously raised funds by doing their own epic cycle challenge.

Although Hazel is a keen cyclist, she will be doing her route over two days, starting at Dumfries train station on Friday July 11.

And she will have to go partly off-road, with a climb of nearly 3000 metres.

Hazel set herself the goal of raising £1 for every kilometre ridden, but with one month to go she has quickly surpassed that and her current total was £655.62, at the time of publication.

Yard manager at Mossburn, Siobhan Webster, yesterday shared her gratitude towards Hazel, wishing her luck when she hits the road next month.

She said: “Hazel has just started to volunteer with us and we’re so grateful that she’s taking on this challenge to fundraise for the farm.

“She’s been preparing for it for a little over a month now, going out on practice cycles.

“Everything donated will go towards the care of the animals, from feed and bedding to vet bills. If everyone can get behind Hazel and support her on through this challenge it would be incredible.”
