Youth work team nomination for award
DUMFRIES and Galloway Council’s Youth Work Team has been shortlisted for the “Large Team of the Year” Award at the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) Awards 2025. The finalist nomination is to mark the work the team deliver in local communities each week with young people and for their role organising the annual Youth Beatz Festival.

The LGC Awards is a celebration of excellence in local government across the UK, and highlights outstanding achievements, recognising the dedication of teams and individuals who make a real difference to local communities.

Councillor Maureen Johnstone said of the nomination: “This is a testament to the passion and professionalism of our Youth Work Team, who go above and beyond every year to create a safe, inclusive and inspiring experience for young people across our region. Youth Beatz is more than just a festival with the variety of educational activities on offer, and we are incredibly proud of what the team has achieved.”

With 20,000 attendees daily, the summer event is delivered by council youth workers and young and adult volunteers, not professional event staff. Central to its success is “The Toon Experience”, an immersive educational drama production tackling and addressing issues that affect the lives of young people. Young people are involved in designing certain aspects of the event, by working alongside Youth Work Staff to help co-design elements such as the Fringe Festival, Second Stage, Youth Work Tent and more.

Councillor Lynne Davis added: “Being shortlisted for a UK wide award like the LGC Awards is a big achievement. Our Youth Work Team work hard and importantly work alongside young people to make a real, lasting impact. We wish them the best of luck and thank them for their continued dedication.”

The winners of the LGC Awards 2025 will be announced at a ceremony in London next month.
